What is a Deolmi Puppet?
The Deolmi puppet is one of the six traditional performance arts from Namsadang Nori. It is recognized as both a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a Korean National Intangible Cultural Asset.
“Deolmi” refers to the back of the puppet’s neck, as puppeteers traditionally control it from behind. Classic versions use strings below the puppet stage, while the puppets made by EUMMA Gangkang are hand-operated, with internal levers that control facial expressions like eyebrows and mouth.
