Lotus Lantern Festival

Originating from a tale where a poor woman’s heartfelt lantern shone brighter and longer than any other, the Lantern Festival has been passed down in various forms for over 1,200 years. Today, it takes the form of a procession through the city, with numerous participants carrying lanterns they have personally crafted. Each participant carries two lanterns: one representing themselves and their family, and the other representing their wish to fill the world with wisdom and compassion. Recognized for its societal value, the festival was designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012 and inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020, becoming a beloved festival cherished by people worldwide.

• Program:
  – Traditional Lantern Exhibition (4/24 – 5/15) Showcasing traditional lanterns made of Hanji paper at various locations in downtown Seoul, allowing citizens to experience their charm firsthand.
  – Yeoulrim Madang (Gathering Square) (5/11 16:30 – 18:00) At the Dongguk University Stadium, Yeoulrim Madang presents lively performances celebrating Buddha’s Birthday, stirring up excitement.
  – Lantern Parade (5/11 19:00 – 21:20) Witness the magnificent sight of countless lanterns, filled with the hearts and aspirations of participants, adorning the city with wisdom and compassion.
  – Daedong Hanmadang (Grand Celebration Square) (5/11 21:30 – 23:00) Participants and spectators alike come together to enjoy a lively Ganggangsullae dance under a shower of flower petals.
  – Traditional Culture & Performance Square (5/12 11:00 – 18:00) Experience, taste, create, and dance! A hands-on experience square where you can enjoy Korean traditional culture with all your senses.
  – Lantern Play (5/12 19:00 – 21:00) Let’s cheer up the closing moments of this year’s Lantern Festival with lively performances and EDM frenzy in Insa-dong and in front of Jogyesa Temple.
